We are asking for contributions to help fund our 2021 Boaters' Rights Advocacy Fund efforts. Last year, boaters were generous, and we were able to meet our goals for the 2020 legislative calendar. We are asking for your support again.

A coalition of membership organizations committed to enhancing boaters experience have joined together to create a singular combined effort to meet our needs as many members cross pollinate amongst the various groups. Members include America’s Great Loop Cruisers’ Association (AGLCA); DeFever Cruisers (DF); Marine Trawler Owners Association (MTOA); and Seven Seas Cruising Association (SSCA).
Why We Continue On:
The Boaters’ Rights Advocacy Coalition is committed to defending boaters’ rights for anchoring and waterway access. As legislative actions continue to increase, we want to be proactive in protecting our boating rights and to do this we, as a Coalition, need to leverage member donations to fund lobbyist support to assure a voice and a seat at the table.
A few of the successes we’ve been proud to be part of on behalf of all boaters include:
- Preventing additional Florida municipalities from being added to the “anchoring restriction zones” where overnight anchoring is prohibited
- Prevented boaters from needing a permit to anchor in waterways in Georgia
- Provided feedback at a meeting of the “Reimagining the Erie Canal” task force subcommittee
- Provide feedback on any proposed legislation
The Coalition is launching the fundraising campaign for 2021 and the goal for this year is $24,000. Organizations do not use membership dues to support advocacy efforts. Organizations are active advocates for our members in many ways, but we handle most issues with staff time and expertise, volunteers, and grass-roots efforts from our members when needed. We continue to believe that proactive action is required, and we hope you will see that too; however, we know not everyone is interested in these issues and therefore, we have not opted for small increases in across-the-board dues to fund this effort. Instead, we are asking our members to contribute individually when needed and we leave it up to each of you to decide whether to participate.
Each coalition member’s website (other than DeFever Cruisers) will be set up to accept donations on behalf of their specific Boaters' Rights Advocacy Fund account and then those funds will be shared to the overall Coalition account periodically to fund the contracted lobbyist.
If the funds collected exceed what is needed to engage our lobbyist, the remainder of contributions will be held by the Association to help offset travel costs for members and staff who travel to participate in the process. The remaining excess, if it exists, will be held for use on future advocacy efforts.
Ways to Give:
There are many reasons to give in support of the Advocacy Fund, and you do not need to be a member of any of the Coalition organizations to contribute. PLEASE GIVE TODAY at www.greatloop.org/contribute.
